Books That Celebrate the Human-Animal Bond
When I think about the animals who have shaped my life—and the books they have inspired—I rarely remember them simply as animals.
I remember the way a particular dog looked at her person. The way a cat seemed to know when someone needed comfort. I remember the stories people have shared with me about a companion who seemed to understand them without a single word being spoken.
Those are the moments that stay with me. They are also the moments I carry into my books.
Writing Books About the Human-Animal Bond
I have had the joy of writing across several very different genres. I write nonfiction books that explore animals, nature, grief, and the human-animal bond. I write children’s books, where animals can open a door to curiosity, imagination, compassion, and wonder. And as Melanie Snow, I write paranormal cozy mysteries in which animals become characters, companions, clues, and sometimes part of the mystery itself.
The genres may be different, but for me, there is a common thread:
The relationship is the story.
The Relationship Is the Story
This becomes especially clear in my work as an animal communicator and medium.
I have learned that communication with animals is about much more than words. It is about listening differently. It is about paying attention to emotion, behavior, personality, memory, and the subtle ways animals connect with the people around them.
But often, what matters most is not what an animal communicates.
It is what the relationship means to the person.
When the Ordinary Becomes Precious
That is especially true in my work as a pet loss grief coach.
When someone is grieving an animal, they are not grieving an image or a possession. They are grieving a relationship woven into the fabric of everyday life.
They may be grieving the companion who greeted them every morning.
The one who slept beside them.
The one who knew when they were sad.
The one who was there through changes, challenges, celebrations, and all the ordinary days that quietly make up a life.
Those ordinary moments become extraordinary when the animal is no longer there. They are also the moments that find their way into the books I write.
Where Wonder Begins in Children’s Books
In children’s books, the relationship between a person and an animal can help a child discover something important about the world. An animal character can become a friend, a teacher, a source of courage, or a doorway into understanding another living being.
Children often have a wonderful ability to imagine what an animal might be thinking or feeling. They do not always need to be told that animals have rich inner lives. They seem to understand it naturally.
As a children’s author, I want my books to protect and encourage that sense of wonder.
Animals at the Heart of Mystery Books
As Melanie Snow, I explore the relationship between humans and animals in a different way. In my paranormal cozy mystery books, an animal might notice something a human overlooks. A familiar may have a personality all its own. An unexpected animal encounter might even become part of the mystery.
The story may be fictional, but the relationship is still at its heart.
That is what connects my books with my work as an animal communicator, medium, and pet loss grief coach.
The Thread That Connects All My Books
Whether I am writing nonfiction, creating a story for a child, solving a mystery as Melanie Snow, communicating with an animal, or helping someone navigate the loss of a beloved companion, I keep returning to the same truth:
The human-animal bond is the story.
It gives us laughter.
Comfort.
Lessons.
Memories.
Love.
And sometimes, even after the physical relationship has changed, the story continues.
The animals who touch our lives do more than become part of our memories. They become part of who we are.
Those are the relationships I honor in my work—and in the books I write.
